چکیده

This paper deals with ground states for finite-range interaction potentials in lattice models on S d , where S is a finite set. First, we analyse the projective structure of the set of finite, translation-invariant, measures. Second, we show some drastic differences between d = 1 and d = 2 which shed light on crystalline and quasicrystalline ground states. The latter are modelled as uniquely ergodic shifts of finite type (SFT for short) which are showed to have necessarily zero entropy. For d = 1, a uniquely ergodic SFT can only be a single periodic orbit, whereas, for d = 2, we prove the existence of a uniquely ergodic SFT without periodic points. To that end we use Wang tilings and pull back some properties of the Penrose tilings. This example reflects in particular the link between substitution dynamical systems and subshifts of finite type which exists for d ≥ 2.

On the Geometry of Ground States and Quasicrystals in Lattice Systems

We propose a geometric point of view to study the structure of ground states in lattice models, especially those with ‘non-periodic long-range order’ which can be seen as toy models for quasicrystals. In a lattice model, the configuration space is S d where S is a finite set, and Θ denotes action of the group Z by translation or ‘shift’. Given a shift-invariant potential Φ, ground states are no...

Stable Quasicrystalline Ground States

We give a strong evidence that noncrystalline materials such as quasicrystals or incommensurate solids are not exceptions but rather are generic in some regions of a phase space. We show this by constructing classical lattice gas models with translationinvariant, finite-range interactions and with a unique quasiperiodic ground state which is stable against small perturbations of two-body potent...

This manuscript is the collection of lectures given in the summer school on strongly correlated electron systems held at Isfahan university of technology, June 2007. A short overview on quantum magnetism and spin systems is presented. The numerical exact diagonalization (Lanczos) alghorithm is explained in a pedagogical ground. This is a method to get some ground state properties on finite clus...

Thermodynamically Stable One-Component Metallic Quasicrystals

Classical density-functional theory is employed to study finite-temperature trends in the relative stabilities of one-component quasicrystals interacting via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory. Comparing the free energies of several periodic crystals and rational approximant models of quasicrystals over a range of pseudopotential parameters, thermodynamically...

Thermodynamically Stable One-Component Quasicrystals: A Density-Functional Survey of Relative Stabilities

A combination of classical density-functional theory and thermodynamic perturbation theory is applied to a survey of finite-temperature trends in the relative stabilities of one-component crystals and quasicrystals interacting via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory. Splitting the pair potential into a strongly repulsive short-range core and a relatively weak ...
